"Crazy Bald American, coming to a town near you..."

Husband to one, Father to four sons (notice the lack of hair...the utterly confused, slight look of panic in the eyes). Live in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, and work in the Health Care industry.

Enjoy: computers (professional geek), time with family and friends, photography, outdoors, traveling, reading, and swimming.

Don't enjoy: dumb drivers, zealots, paperwork, getting mauled by bears (or crocodiles, or cougars), losing my hair, and a few other things that may seem strange if I were to put them up here.

I found SmugMug when reviewing places to print my photos, and saw it as a neat place to do most of the things with photos that I want to do (have personal space for photo sharing, allow high-res downloads to friends and family, offer the ability to have prints made, unlimited space for storage, and backups...what else could you want?) Prior to this, I had been hosting my own family photos (I may continue to do that with the bulk of photos, since the only thing about SmugMug I don't like is uploading photos). I Hope to post many of the previous family photos on here and get some prints made, then upload all the recent (and upcoming) photos to share with family and friends.

Since I share the photos openly, I am thinking of password protecting the 'family' shots (those of the wife and children) for the obvious reasons. If you are a friend or family member and haven't gotten a password to see the various family photos, send me an email and ask for one.

The first I had the camera, taking pictures of the boys while jumping on the trampoline.

Another city/bridge shot at night, but this one was with the star filter on the camera. I used to think this type of photo could only be done by professionals. Now I know that any goober like myself can do it...

Another shot through the bars to the Jewish Cemetery.

The gravestones are stacked so tightly because over a hundred thousand people are buried in such a small graveyard that they had to bury the dead on top of each other.

This is one of the very small bridges going across a minor tributary, within the city. To the right is a public park. To the left, a state building and some sandwich shops.

Another shot, showing how closely packed the tombstones are within the cemetery. I believe the first person buried in the cemetery was buried in the 1400's, with the last person being buried in the 1780s or so.

General History:
The Jewish people were not treated very well in Prague during the last 7 centuries or so. Back in the 1300's, the church had a council wherein they decided that Christ's death was their responsibility (I guess they overlooked the fact that his birth was also partially because of them also). Anyway, this gave them the opportunity to persecute the Jews with an official cause.

They stuck them in the "slum" of Prague, forcing them to wear jewish identifying marks (Star of David, large pointed 'dunce' hats, etc).

One of the consequences of forcing them to live in the slums was overpopulation. There was not enough land to go around for everyone, so they only had a small cemetery in which to bury their dead for 4-500 years. They did have a different cemetery initially, but the land proved to be so fertile and valuable that the king took it from them and created a public square with gardens on the spot.

Anyway, burying their dead for so long in one spot caused a few issues...first, the tomb stones were packed too closely together to even be able to walk through (as seen above); second, the people had to be buried on top of each other. After a while they started having to import dirt, and eventually the ground became built up much higher than street level. Currently, ground level within the cemetery is about 12-14 ft about street level, with some areas being as high as 25 ft higher than it used to be.

The arches, columns and painting on the ceiling of the cathedral in Kutna Hora. This picture was taken straight up (the other picture was actually a little nicer, but it had my nose in the edge of it, and you don't need a photo showing the insides of my nostrils).

We weren't supposed to take pictures, so SHHHhhhhh...don't tell anyone that we sneaked a few. I wouldn't have taken any of them, but they didn't sell any photos of the cathedral, and I'd hate to forget how nice it was (plus it was kind of fun, sneaking through the cathedral and trying to take photos without the guards coming around and smacking you).

This is the arch on the other side of the bridge, going from Old Town to Little Town (or the Lesser Quarter). The architecture shown in the picture, while beautiful, is 'average' for the city...everything is beautiful.
